Alumni Provide Much Needed Student Assistance

Alumni Provide Much Needed Student Assistance

Remember the start of the academic year - reuniting with friends, trips to Meijer, the writing of research papers? Unfortunately with that also comes the tuition bill! As state funding to GVSU shrinks, students are shouldering more of the financial burden of higher education. Currently, 70% of GVSU students are dependant on some type of financial assistance. When paychecks, academic scholarships, and grants aren’t enough, our generous alumni have stepped in to offer financial assistance through need-based scholarships, just one of the programs supplemented by the Grand Valley Fund . Thank you to the 5,400 alumni who gave to Grand Valley last year to make this possible. Learn more...

President Haas Gives Annual Start of School Address

President Haas Gives Annual Start of School Address

President Haas and other Convocation speakers welcomed new students to GVSU on Friday, August 28, during the traditional start to the academic year. His remarks at Convocation followed an opening address earlier in the day to about 400 faculty and staff members. At the start of his fourth year at Grand Valley, Haas said the state’s economic outlook may have changed but the university’s values have stayed consistent. “In the past three years our mission has guided our actions and our decisions — all of which are built on the values of Grand Valley State University." He said his top priorities remain to secure funding for construction of the Mary Idema Pew Library Learning and Information Commons and to remind state legislators of their responsibility to invest in this state. "Public education is integral to a vibrant and robust economy,” Haas said. “I challenge our legislators by reminding them that they have a moral obligation to nurture that asset.” Full Story...
